Il racconto per immagini The Dead Eye and the Deep Blue Sea descrive in maniera molto vivida, tratto caratteristico dell’autobiografia, alcune forme assunte dalla schiavitù contemporanea. Questo breve saggio, che muove dalla lettura dal racconto, cerca di ragionare sulle figure giuridiche che stanno dietro l’ambigua e a-tecnica nozione di schiavitù contemporanea, nella fattispecie la tratta e il lavoro forzato. L’articolo indaga inoltre sui motivi che spingono chi ha vissuto eventi traumatici quali quelli descritti dal graphic novel a raccontare le proprie vicende. Infine si valorizza l’uso della letteratura come strumento per una più efficace didattica del diritto.

The autobiographic novel The Dead Eye and the Deep Blue Sea has a very revealing subtitle: A Graphic Memoir of Modern Slavery. Vividly and with force, the graphic novel depicts some contemporary forms of subjugation. This short essay stems from the novel, analysing the exploitation suffered by the author and defining what specific legal offences it constitutes, thereby showing that “modern slavery” is often used as a rather vague umbrella term. In fact, the scrutiny of the narration reveals, nested within the term “modern slavery”, the specific offences of forced labour and human trafficking. In addition to legal analysis, this essay suggests a reflection on why the recounting of one’s own traumatic events is beneficial and why, through the force of firsthand experience, the results of such a testimony can also be adopted in the teaching of law.
